Dear Pa Farang,
Two years ago, I lent my Thai brother-in-law 500,000 baht ($12,500) to start a business that would eventually support my wife's family. We all agreed that it was a loan, as it was money earmarked for my eldest son's college education (he just turned 18). I now need the money, and no sign of repayment, and no business has been started!
I hate to be ugly about this, but I'm thinking of taking him to court. Prior to taking this drastic step, do you have any advice on any other decent way to recover the money? My wife has become distant with me over this issue, as she and her brother are quite close.
Sincerely,
Khun Joe

Dear Vet,
How fast can you get to the airport? To be blunt, 500,000 baht more than takes care of finishing you off (do you live in a high-rise?). Before you leave Thailand, hire a private eye to determine if your brother in law is actually your wife's Thai husband. Because it is the Good Manner to give (not lend) money to your in-laws, you have broken a social rule. I suspect there's more than meets the eye here. Be prudent, as you may have been set up for a very old con that won't even leave your son enough money to pay for your funeral.
I'd suggest hiding out in a hotel for a day or so while you purchase your air ticket home and hire a detective.
Marayat dee!
Pa Farang
